Local services, ward councilors, residents, school children and even dogs came to Halifax Rugby Union Club this week to support the launch of the Daisy Chain Café.
Daisy Chain Café is a new community run, monthly meeting place in Ovenden run by volunteers and partners from the North Halifax Staying Well Steering Group who are working towards a Dementia Friendly North Halifax.
Funded by the ‘North Halifax Community Fund’ Daisy Chain Café is open to anybody especially people and living with or affected by dementia. The mission of the cafe is to provide friendship, support, activities and cake!
Deputy Mayor of Calderdale, Councillor Chris Pillai opened the event by thanking the hard work of volunteers in working to set the cafe up. Some of the volunteers have personal experience of dementia and understand how a café of this nature can really make a difference to the lives of people affected by dementia.
Councillor Anne Collins who welcomed everyone to the event said,
How exciting this is for the North Halifax to host a Dementia Café that will run once a month working towards making North Halifax Dementia Friendly
Based at Halifax Rugby Union Club, Ovenden Park the cafe will open from 1pm – 3pm every second Wednesday of the month and will include activities such as quizzes, visiting entertainers, chair exercises, Bocha (a type of boules), singing and bingo.
The next opening will be Wednesday 14 November.
The North Halifax Community Fund includes funding from the Community Foundation for Calderdale Isolation Fund and Staying Well funding. Read more about the fund here.

“The North Halifax Steering Group, which is made up of local people and community groups decided that Daisy Chain Café was well deserving of the funding from Community Foundation for Calderdale and Staying Well as it supports our aims to develop activities that improve social opportunity and prevent loneliness and isolation in adults in Calderdale”
