National Hate Crime Awareness Week 10 – 17 October 2020 – Let’s end Hate Crime!

This week the awareness is on Hate Crime, a very serious and upsetting issue that can and must be prevented. We are joined together in our efforts to End Hate Crime for good.

National Hate Crime Awareness Week 2020 (NHCAW) takes place from 10th – 17th October. The theme for this year is ‘Let’s End Hate Crime.’

What is hate crime?
A hate crime is any crime committed against someone where the motivation has been hostility, prejudice or hatred towards that person because of their:
• Disability (including physical impairments, mental health problems, learning disabilities, hearing and visual impairment)
• Race – nationality, ethnicity, skin colour and heritage
• Faith – includes religion, belief, including non-religious belief
• Sexual orientation – people who identify as lesbian, gay, bi-sexual or heterosexual
• Gender identity – people who identify as ‘trans’, including transgender or transsexual people
• Alternative sub cultures/lifestyles – the way a person looks or dresses

Hate crimes and incidents hurt; they can be confusing and frightening. By reporting them when they happen to you, you may be able to prevent these incidents from happening to someone else.  You will also help the police understand the extent of hate crime in your local area so they can better respond to it.

Anyone can be a victim of hate. Hate crime and incidents can take place anywhere – at home, in the street, online, at work or at school. No one should have to live with the fear, anxiety and consequences of hate crime.

There are several resources on how to handle incidents of Hate Crime and Hate Incidents.
