A major piece of work is underway to invest in community mental health services. The aim is to improve people’s experience by creating a new system that closes the gaps. Importantly, this new system will properly value the role of the voluntary and community sector (VCS) in mental health support. The VCS have been lobbying for this recognition for many years – the community MH transformation presents a genuine opportunity to make this happen. If your organisation has a role to play in community mental health support, it is time to get involved!
Healthy Minds Calderdale want to start the conversation about how this could work in Calderdale with a Zoom meeting for local VCS providers on Tuesday 15th December at 3.30pm.
NHS England has set extremely short deadlines for the proposal, which is why this initial meeting is at such short notice. A draft proposal has been submitted to NHS England. A final proposal needs to be submitted in January 2021. If Calderdale is successful and awarded funding, the transformation work will start in 2021 and take place over a three-year period.
Tuesday’s meeting will not be the one and only discussion as plans develop but a start needs to be made.
Things to bear in mind:
The transformation programme is to improve care for adults and older adults with severe mental illness (not including dementia).
Some priorities have been set by NHS England. They are:
- Provide better care to people already receiving mental health support in the community;
- Increase access to these services;
- Improve pathways for people with eating disorders, people who have community rehab needs and people have a personality disorder diagnosis;
- Increase the number of people with Severe Mental Illness (SMI) receiving a comprehensive physical health checks.
